Author: Doreen Cronin Illustrator: Betsy Lewin Genre/Category: Fiction Format: Picture Book Brief Summary: Duck decides he is tired of being a farm animal, and he wants a job that is more FUN! Duck moves up the political ladder through the voting process. Only to realize that these jobs are not as easy as he thought, and that he misses his job on the farm with Farmer Brown. * Distinctive Crafting: Full of illustrations that use patriotic colors to compliment the theme of government. The illustrations have less defined edges giving the book a more elementary look; however, the illustrations and text compliment each other very well, filling in the blanks for one another, for the reader. Background Demands: Voting, Campaigning, Government Instructional Activities in Reading/Writing and/or Social Studies: Use this to introduce students to the voting process, or the different roles of the Governor and the President of the United States. Discuss what a campaign is. Break students into groups of four. Each group will design a campaign to get their teacher elected as president. Students should be allowed two-three days to work on putting together their campaign then will present to the class and the teacher in an effort to have their campaign "chosen." |
